Subject: Spinoff/movies, is it a lie?

I have heard rumors about a spike movie/show, etc. And as well as a Faith spinoff. But does anyone know if they are really considering this or just stringing us along? They told us when the show ended, that they would consider a couple movies, but nothing ever came of it. I know that James Marsters would do a movie or a tv series and im not really sure about Eliza Dushku, but does Joss still want to do that?

Joss Whedon seems to be more interested in doing mmovies. There is nothing wrong with that. Wonder Woman is his baby now. He starts writing for that script in the Fall I think.

It will be years if ever before we see another Buffy/Angelverse project on the tube.

but never say never. They're remaking everything else that's ever been made; eventually, they'll get around to some more Jossverse

And I think some fans want to see a more recent movie with the characters/actors who made it a hit. And a movie with the current cast will most likely not happen.

Question though, will a movie really satisfy (or even work) fans? Considering what made the series (both series) work was it's soaplike fashion?

[> I think we just have to wait until after Serenity opens -- deanna b, 20:57:25 07/30/05 Sat [1] (

Joss has said more than once in the last year that if TPTB wants a Spike movie, he'd arrange to make that happen. He probably wouldn't be able to write and direct, but he'd still be the one behind it. James has said that he'd do it, as long as it's in the next four years. Now, last week, the head of the WB has said publically that, yes, they do want a Spike movie from Joss Whedon. Why, with those facts at hand, would anyone still think it's a lie?

Now it's just a matter of when Joss and James will be able to schedule it in, which undoubtedly won't happen until after Joss gets Serenity in the theatres in September. Joss is still working on publicity for that, and announcing anything about the Spike movie before it opens would detract from the ad campaign for that, since reporters would be more interested in the return of the Buffyverse than getting quotes about the movie. So I think we'll hear something definite in the couple months after Serenity opens. But of course it's going to happen. The WB basically announced that it's been given the green light.

And Joss and the others have talked about also doing a Giles TV-movie after Spike's (basically it would be the script he wrote for the never-filmed Ripper pilot), and a couple others. Who the other two would be seems to change each time Joss mentions it, or anyone who's spoken to Joss mentions it, but it's been a constant since AtS went off the air that Joss wants to do a Spike movie followed by a Giles movie, then maybe another one or two. That's still unchanged. The other movies probably hinge on how well the first one does.

But don't hold your breath until SMG comes back in a big screen Buffy movie. If there's any theatrical movie, I think it would probably be Angel with other AtS cast members, since Boreanaz still seems interested in that. Faith is anyone's guess. My guess is that she'll be one of the other two TV-movies, if Dushku isn't tied up with anything else.

And the interviews with Joss when he closed the Mutant Enemy offices specifically said that as soon as another TV project comes up, he'd reopen ME right away. So anyone who says that there can't be any more Jossverse because there's no Mutant Enemy obviously never read those interviews, or thinks that, for some unknown reason, Joss is lying. Honestly, I think some fans on other boards have agendas to the point that they'd deny that there'll be any continuation of the Jossverse even as the movie is airing. La, la, not watching it, therefore it doesn't exist. La, la.

[> [> Umm after Serenity he will be concentrating on "Wonder Woman" -- Christian, 21:16:48 07/30/05 Sat [1] (

I think it's the "diehard" fans who seem to "can't let go".

It was fun while it lasted. And I have been reading som of Joss' interviews, read between the lines he doesn't want to go back to those "verses" anytime soon.

[> [> [> What, suddenly people can't multitask??? -- deanna b, 22:08:19 07/30/05 Sat [1] (

Many producers work on more than one thing at a time. True, Joss spread himself too far when he was working on Buffy, Angel, Firefly, writing Fray, and becoming a new father at the same time, plus whatever else he had going, but any project like Wonder Woman is going to be stop and go until it's ready to film. After all, it hasn't even been cast yet! So, especially since Joss is going to have other ME people write the script and direct it, and he probably has the basic story worked out and already has the script written for the Ripper movie, producing a Buffyverse or Angelverse movie or two or four shouldn't be a problem.

And I've been at several panels at conventions where Joss has been asked about continuing the Buffyverse, and watched his face when he's answered, and I'm convinced he's sincere that he really wants to do the movies. And I watched SMG's face when she was asked, and I was convinced that she really doesn't want to do a movie, and she's just giving lip service. Joss never wavered in his answer and looked directly at the audience, while SMG hemmed and hawed before giving a "Well, maybe" answer while looking down. So I'd say that it's Joss being a "diehard fan" who "can't let go" who doesn't want to say goodbye to either of the universes he's created. He's just playing in his Serenity universe first before coming back to his Buffy universe.

And what is BC&S for if not for "diehard fans"? If we weren't, if we could "let go" so easily, we wouldn't still be posting on boards for a television series that ended two years ago, would we? The original Star Trek's diehard fans who wouldn't let go was the reason that they got several movies, four spinoff series and an animated series, plus numerous comics, novels, etc. before their franchise finally sputtered and died (at least temporarily). So, if we "diehard fans" get our movies, are you saying that you won't watch them? You REALLY don't WANT movies? If you watch them and like them, you won't thank those who wouldn't let go, thereby making the movies possible?

And when has any of the actors doing a series ever prevented them from filming a movie? Scooby Doo, Valentine, the American Pie movies, Chance, and lots of other movies were made during the active runs of BtVS and AtS, often while episodes were still being filmed. I'm not saying that an Angel movie is definite, but if there's a theatrical movie, I think it's much more likely to be an Angel movie (or an Angel/Spike buddy movie) than a Buffy movie. You're getting things slightly confused between the Angel questions at the Fox panel and what he said at the panel about walking out of a meeting with the producers of his new series because they only wanted to talk about Angel, but he has restated twice in the last week that he'd like to do a big-budget Angel movie on the big screen, while at the same time SMG has apparently stated, through her husband, that she really doesn't want to do it. Take that for what it's worth. But TV-movies are definitely first.

[> [> [> [> Of course "he can multitask' but it's what made Buffy and Angel suffer in the end. -- Christian, 00:15:46 07/31/05 Sun [1] (

Like you have said he "spread himself too thin" which made him tired and made his other work, (which made him a household name) Buffy and Angel suffer in the writing and direction wich in turn made many fans not watch which in turn made the series lose in the ratings. So, was the multitasking worth it in the end? I guess not.

"Wonder Woman" seems to be a big budget movie and I am betting that Joss Whedon wants to do EVERYTHING he can to make that a HUGE success fr him to put him on the map at least and garner him the respect he wants in the "movie industry". TV and Feature Films are both different arenas.

Now I am a big fan, I loved both Buffy AND Angel dearly making "Faith the Slayer" my ALL time favoite character but I don't want to get my hopes up. I have had 8 great years of watching both shows but I honestly don't see a future verse with ANY of the original characters, mainly Buffy/Angel. They will have to re-start the verse with "new" characters IF and When Joss decides to go back to it.

I think Tonia is talking about the more recent characters. I think fans want to see/know what happened to their favorite characters after their Apocolypses.

Trying for a movie with a whole new character will be a tough sell. Right now anyway.

It is easy to understand why an actor like DB or SMG might be reluctant to revisit a character that's over for them. There is the whole type casting thing and also the desire for a new challenge and the hope that, in DB's and SMG's cases especially, a new role will bring them the same success in the future they had in the past. It must be hard to forever be tied in the public's mind with a certain character and certainly they are to be commended in their desire for new creative directions. Sad for us fan types but, if I was in a similar position, I don't think I would ever want to revisit such a role once it was over.

With writers though, I think it is a different story. Their creative endeavors are not in the same sense "them". It 's easy to understand why DB might get irritated by people only wanting to talk about Angel when he is publicizing a new series. He isn't Angel the vampire, he just played him once upon a time, and now he 's doing something else. But with writers like JW, expressing interest in their creations is like expressing interest in a parent's child. Any parent will tell you that telling us how wonderful are our children just never gets tired. So if JW gets a good enough offer or he suddenly sees a new story idea, or the stars align just so, a new Buffyverse project is entirely possible. But probably not, unfortunately, with many of the actors that made BtVS and Ats so compelling. And this new story is going to have to find its audience on its own merits, at least for me, because I have resigned myself to never getting closure on the old story.

And I read somewhere (I can't remember) that he got upset with a reporter because instead of asking DB about "Bones" they kept asking him about "Angel" even to the extent that DB got up and left the panel. I could be wrong.

[> [> [> I hate hearsay -- Eddy, 05:57:07 08/01/05 Mon [1] (

This is incorrect. David was talking on the panel about when he auditioned for Bones and the creators talked non-stop about Angel and it upset him so he left the audition.

Course he got the role anyways so they obviously worked it out.

The creators of "Bones" were talking non-stop about "Angel" during his audition?

Or at least, that's what's been reported by a lot of people who at that question and answer session. Whether it makes sense or not...well, DB doesn't always make sense, which is actually part of his charm. :-)

Joss has said more than once in the last year that if TPTB wants a Spike movie, he'd arrange to make that happen. Actually, there are no "lies" being told because there are no "truths" being told. Everything you've said is subject to interpretation.

A network, ANY network, will never approach Joss W. and say "we want to do a Spike movie." Joss has to approach them. If they think it will make them money/get good ratings, the green light is given.

The head of the WB didn't say they "want" a Spike movie from Joss W.:

"The "Smallville" stint may not be the only work on The WB for [James] Marsters. Network head David Janollari says he would "gladly" do a TV movie featuring the Spike character if Marsters and "Buffy"/"Angel" creator Joss Whedon want to do one."

There's a big difference between "want" and "would gladly do."

Joss has put the Buffyverse on the back burner for now. That doesn't mean that he can't revisit it in some form, but with Wonder Woman and other projects coming up and taking up his time, I don't think you'll see anything.

[> [> [> Thank you Leoff that totally makes a lot more sense when you say it. -- Christian, 15:50:31 08/01/05 Mon [1] (

I always felt that "right now" Joss wants to do other things than "Slayers and Vampires". I mean isn't that why "Buffy" and "Angel" was put on the backburner EVEN when both shows were still airing because he wanted to try his hand at other things?

Me? i'm ok if there isn't another movie/spinoff. If he can't devote his time to write or direct a Buffy/Angelverse then really what's the sense? Don't give that chore to someone else. The project could suffer.
