See the Hollywood economist on Slate.com for more info on how Hollywood really makes money, and some inside money stuff.

Pretty revealing. Among other tidbits (buried in the Tom Cruise story): DVDs wholesale average of $15, studio rakes in $10 or so after marketing/guild/other expenses. Shrek 2 did around 28 million DVDs, MI 2 around 20 million DVDs, and Incredibles around 17 million DVDs. Leading to profits of 280 million for Shrek 2 alone, and practices for channel stuffing.

In some ways movies are more mass market than ever, just on TV, DVDs, etc. In other ways ... well in 1948 around what, 75% of people went to the movies in theatres. Now, around 10%. Ouch.

And sodas and popcorn are extremely expensive, so I sneak in a 2 liter pepsi that goes for $0.99 for me and my guy and he buys me a Taco Bell salad.

It costs 19.00 for 2 large popcorns and 2 large sodas in the theatres. That is TOO crazy!
