ALL ABOUT BOXERS MESSAGE BOARD

This is the place for all those who care about the Boxer breed to join together, share information, training tips, Rescue Information, laugh and cry, and mostly just share our love for that wonderful breed of dogs...Boxers! Rules for Posting: No Boxer stud ads, breeder ads or recommendations (do this by private email). Posts of this nature will be removed: no exceptions. WE PROMOTE RESCUE. We do ask that each participant be kind, no use of profanity, and remember this is a place to enjoy...communicate...and love those Boxers!!! Feel free to attack the tough issues, just not each other! We want to address controversial issues on this board. Communication brings about informed ownership, and a better relationship with our Boxers. So sound off! This board is also open to questions, funny stories, sad stories, and most things Boxer.

Do we still have Boxers we love and care about? Do we still have personal relationships with each other? Is there any other board with such close personal ties?......it IS a family!
I think many of us are sad and feeling like "family moved away"......and didn't tell us.
Can we have a roll call? Can we hear what's going on in our "Boxer family lives"?
We are getting ready to head back to California......I will miss the soupy foggy walks on the beach like I had with Lulu this morning. But we'll be back and I'm aching to hug my family. We'll stop on our way home to visit with my sister and her son (she had open heart, 5 way bypass surgery in July).
And another thing......! I might have exciting news around October or November. It would make me sad if there was no one here to share it with.
C'mon now! Don't make me come over there.....!

Lennox has gone after Sugar twice today - this has NEVER happened before. Im assuming its cuz he just had surgery and isnt himself - but sugar is so upset. Never never have any of my dogs done this before.

I have no idea what I should do in such a situation.

He didnt hurt her - but she is sooooooooooooo sensitive. this afternoon when it happened she was shaking and wouldnt be in the same room with him - after 2 hours she was back to normal, but it just happened again.

The good news......Titus is getting a baby brother or sister; due February 28. We won't know what it is until the 2nd week of October. Titus doesn't know yet, but he "knows", if that makes sense. Per Titus, he is getting a baby sister and will her name will be Grace. Don't know where that came from; we don't know a soul named Grace.

The bad news......Just after Kristi found her she was pregnant, she found a 3cm lump just under her left breast. The OBGYN, radiologist, and surgeon all feel that it is nothing to worry about, but that it needs to be removed. She will have surgery around 6:00am Wednesday morning. All doctors involved felt they needed to wait until the 12wk point for the surgery. The surgeon tells us there will be minimal danger to the baby. But then there's that other minimal part.

I have just about worried myself sick. My mother had breast cancer four years ago. Two years ago, Kristi had the melanoma removed from her left shoulder. I would be worried even if she weren't pregnant. My concern is that if the doctors are WRONG, and it really is cancer, WHAT are they going to do. Kristi is just 12 weeks. Can she wait until March to start any type of treatment? And what if they feel she HAS to do something now. She will have some hard choices to make.

I would so much appreciate it if you would say a prayer for my girl Wednesday.

Lennox was neutured on Friday - I waited this long to have it done because only one testicle dropped and the vet couldnt feel the other one. I wanted to wait to see if the doc could feel it as he got a little older so it wouldnt be such invasive surgery. A couple of months ago he was able to feel the second one. Lennox also had a growth on the inside of his leg we planned to take off at the same time. Luckily, the growth went away on its on.

Poor baby. Surgery went fine - but before surgery when they put the iv in his arm he went straight at it with his mouth - so on went the cone - Dr Doe said he turned around for a sec and heard all this thrashing about. Apparently the cone freaked out lennox - he was up on his back feet throwing his head side to side - and hit his face on something, got a bloody nose and popped a blood vessle in his right eye.

Safe to say the Vet recommended we not try the cone again.

By saturday morning Lennox was ready to romp and play - its gonna be interesting keeping him calm for 10 days!

Lennox and Sugar have spent a lot of time licking each others face since he got home - Sugar was a bit worried when he was gone all day - and she wasnt sure what to make of him when he was still dopey and quiet.

I had to go to the hospital this morning for a cat scan and of course, Mooch stayed home with Ophelia. When I was there 3 people asked where my dog was. Were disappointed when I said he was home. He visits patients there every week and knows the day he goes and can't wait to see his friends.

Mind you we have AC and a fan usually on the dogs so they dont get hot......... he will usually sit with his face on the ac vent or in front of the fan. lol.

Hey everybody,

Its been a while but I need your help. First, Daezee is doing great and so are the beagles.

A girl I work with lost her dog last night, her dog was her world as well as her husbands world seeing as he is home with cancer. I am looking for some kind of dogs prayer that I can put into a card for her. I need it by Sunday night and cant seem to find anything.

Do any of you have something that I can use as she clearly has her heart breaking right now.

Saturday was 102, Sunday 103, Monday 104, got home yesterday evening and it was 107..... and Zack was outside, laying in the grass, watching the gate in the driveway... waiting for his "Dad-toy" to come home. I was very surprized to see him out there because he has been having tough times breathing when it gets hot, but Pat says he had just gone out... He "knows" the time that I'm supposed to come home. What a butt-head :)) Today is supposed to cool down to 105.......

My biggest passion in life is Boxers and right up there with that is the hope that one day there will be no need for animal shelters, foster homes or rescuers for all companion animals and the only way to accomplish this is through advocating and working towards responsible government, responsible ownership and responsible breeding. I have posted an "Interview at the Dog Pound" in the reply. It's long and it's sad and it's oh so true of every animal shelter in this country.

I RECENTLY ADOPTED A 8 WEEK OLD BOXER. SHE IS NOW 11 WEEKS OLD AND SCARED OF EVERYTHING AND EVERYONE. SHE WAS SO SCARED WHEN I PLACED HER IN THE ARMS OF MY SON THAT SHE POOPED ON HIM AND HE WAS SWEET TALKING TO HER. ARE THEY NORMALY SCARED OF PEOPLE? SHE IS VERY VERY MELLOW SHES BEEN TO THE VETS AND CHECKED OUT PERFECT, SHES BEEN WITH US FOR 3 WEEKS NOW. I TAKE HER EVERYWHERE AND SOCIALIZE HER ALL THE TIME. ANY HELP OUT THERE?

I'm going to be driving to my sister's home tomorrow to care for her for awhile. She had open-heart surgery (5 way bypass)6 days ago.
If anyone has any good recipes or websites with good heart-healthy recipes, I'd love to have them.
Like most everyone - I do know the basics but don't always practice them. I also run out of ideas after chicken, fish, pasta, fruit, veggies and different ways to prepare them.
The Big Guy will stay in Oregon to care for the dogs and take care of himself - he can do it :-)

Here are a few picture of Butler's nose. It was healed up for awhile, but then "whatever it is" has come back. The doctor says that it is "Nasodigital Hyperkeratosis" From everything I've read, this is not something that is curable, but controllable, and is not life threatening. I'm taking him back this morning to get it looked at again - just for my own satisfaction. Plus he has a really itchy, red paw.

The pics are in the next post. They are big, but I didn't want to reduce them because you can't see the areas as well.

So Tony the Tiger has a VERY annoying habbit, just wanted to share a new one with you all.

When he gets hot, he has a bad habbit of tipping over the water dish, and than he will lay in the water to cool off creating a big ol mess. Now tell me this isn't annoying? He also is like wonder dog, he literally fly's in the air. he will leap down from about the middle of my stairs and fly down them, I am trying to break him of this as its dangerous he also fly's in the air to get from one couch to the other its a bad habbit and were trying to teach him its not okay. he also quite the little swimmer, he goes in the pool, grabs a frisbee and swims all over the pool with it just so happiliy and so proud of himself!! he is just so darn cute I can't stand it.

Him and Tigs are the BEST of friends, its adorable to see my old gal playing so hard with him, they chop chew and tumble around for a good hour a day until Tigs is sacked out panting this is very recent and there total buds now she is always kissing him its so sweet. he LOVES her so much.......... he is growing like a weed is as tall as the girls now and is going to be a big guy!!!

We have a Mama dove nesting in the eaves of our front porch.
She's been sitting there like a good Mama for the 10 days we've been back.
How long does it take for eggs to hatch once they're laid??
On the opposite end of the porch is an empty nest which my neighbor pointed out - that Mama laid her eggs, sat on her nest and hatched her "kids" before we got back (10 days ago). They are now gone doing "teenage birdie things" I suppose.
Just seems odd to me that there would be that long of a span of time where one bird raised her family and the other one just started (especially in the same neighborhood of birds).

Well my little Tony still has the heart murmur. In fact I had another vet I use check him out and he graded it as a 2 closer to a 3, where the other vet graded it at a 1-2. so we will see. he wants to re check him in 3 weeks and than I will take him to a cardilogist to have this checked out. they will be able to tell me why he has the murmur and what his life expectancy is. hopefully it will not be a problem but it is to be determined. the little boy has gained 8 pounds in 1 month, and now he is all healthy and happy he loves to swim, play and snuggle and eat.. He has been a bit shy of Tigra's noises, she growls and sounds like the devil, she does this to play but he is a bit scared of her. lately he has taken the plunge and has been chop chewin with her on the bed, and she LOVES it, this old lady loves her brother and they can really play hard and get into it. he realy digs Tigs and follows her all around but The Bean is also his bud and they really do play and have fun together to. I have no regrets in bringing him home all some of you told me to bring him back and I couldn't do that, I could have brought him back for a full refund but I couldn't do it and its my choice so I will just see where this brings us... He is SUCH a good boy that anytime I have with him is special so I will just enjoy him and hope for the best. he needs a place to rest his head and live to be an old man and I think this is the best plac just like any other boxer boy, so this is the best place for him!!!

Molly's pathology came back on lumps 1-5, all were benign. She still has a mighty large gap in her leg but it is healing little by little. That big one that is causing all the problem and we all thought was another MCT turns out to have been of all things Dermatitis. Well, who'd a thunk? So with the results on the growths and the buffy coat being negative I'm feeling pretty good for the old girl.

Tonight Puddin' is going cross country, say a prayer!

She ripped out the stitches in her hind leg, about seven of them and has this gapping wound down to the muscle fascia. Of course we called the vet and he said that it was so tight there he barely got it closed, and he felt it would be futile to put her under and sew her up again. So we are having to keep it bandaged, one of which she tore off today already. It is GRUESOME.

Pearl turned on Frank a little while ago. Completely unprovoked and without warning. Lilly was not even in the house. She grabbed Frak by the front of his face and initially he tried to back off and then started fighting back and stopped when I ordered him to drop it. She refused to go into her crate, first time she has ever refused a command, and snarled at me when she finally went in. She has a vet appointment early tomorrow morning to make sure there are no physical (obvious) problems. I do not think there will be.

So the necropsy report came back and I would like everyone's opinions since this seems to be a huge topic for debate anyway. Due to Vinnie's hip soreness from his dysplasia, he had been on Rimadyl for about two months.

But no one seemed to give the Rimadyl a second look at all in the cause of Vinnie's seizures and what-not. I myself am not too sure it was the rimadyl since we were doing all the blood tests - preliminary and during - to be sure it was okay. There was a slightly high creatine level, but that was it - and it was a bit high to begin with.

I'm not looking to *blame* the Rimadyl. But my mother-in-law is. I personally think that Vinnie had a brain tumor (but since the vet couldn't get into the skull, we simply don't know...).

But what do you all think? Could the rimadyl have been a factor in Vinnie's death?

Pearl was outside with Carl and when they came in the house Lilly was sitting on the kitchen floor next to me and Pearl jumped her. Carl thought she was in the bedroom with me. We each grabbed a dog and separated them quickly. Pearl was across the room in a down/stay and lunged for Frank and Carl caught her mid-air and that's when we noticed Lilly's front leg - ripped open to the bone for about 4 inches. She's at the emergency room now with Carl and Mason. Pearl is in her crate fast asleep. No matter how careful we are and have been it's never enough... and now she's turning on Frank.

Lilly is not the first dog that Pearl has done this too. When I had her as a foster she was rehomed and returned to me after she nearly killed the family's small dog. She jumped another dog a year or so ago when I was trying to place her. I am out of options. I have literally been looking for a home for her since the day she came to me. I will not take her to a shelter so this can happen to another dog, because it will.

I love Pearl and our hearts are broken... for her and for Lilly. I hope I won't be judged for the decision that we will likely come to.

Shelby spent the night at the emergency vet.
We got a call from Wendy at 5:30 AM....she was completely distraught, sobbing so hard I could barely understand her.
More x-rays were taken at the ER and it was determined Shelby has a Hemangeosarcoma on her spleen........:-(
My opinion is the rock eating was because she has no access to grass or plants in her part of the yard and gulped rocks to try and soothe the pain in her abdomen. I have seen my own dogs do the same thing when vegetation is not available......eat bark chips, try to get nap off the carpet, lick sand. BTW - she had started passing the rocks.
The ER vet wanted to do surgery - the tumor is quite large. Wendy was extremely upset because the tumor was clearly visible on the ER xray but not seen at the reg vet the day before when an xray was taken. Shelby was 13 on Valentine's Day.........the cost for the surgery was quoted at $4000 to $5000. We talked.... all of us are worried about Erica.....should she be involved if Shelby is helped to the bridge? She is a very emotional child and one who truly makes "that connection" some of us have with animals more than others. Wendy wanted to know what it would be like - euthanasia. We told her how it was with Katie which was a similar situation - fine yesterday, in extreme trouble the next day.....and how we made the decision to help her leave as there was nothing but pain, fright, confusion, surgery, transfusions in her future. She was already hooked up to an IV, on pain medication and we opted to do it then rather that bringing her home for a day or two.
I think Wendy and her husband were helped to feel it was "time" by what we told her and that Erica should be included if she wanted to be there. She is going to be in despair about it - but as time passes she would feel better about being with her Shelby dog. The only loss she's dealt with was her first Rat.......and she took it hard. Erica is 10.
When we hung up - Vern and I on the phone in the kitchen and bedroom, Wendy and her husband doing the same thing, it was decided to help her to the bridge. Wendy called back in about 15 minutes after calling the ER vet, telling of their decision but saying they wanted to be with her. The vet recommended they not do it at this time........she was not in pain (because the rocks were being passed now?) and thought they should bring her home and wait for a crisis - "they would know when it's time".
Wendy's family decided to bring her home so we go from here.
Shelby's time is probably very short and it's going to be a roller coaster of emotion for all of them knowing what's coming. My heart goes out to them. Keep Shelby in your thoughts and wish for a comfortable time at home for whatever time she has there.

I don't have the complete story yet but my Grandpuppy is in the hospital.

She *does* have a tummy and intestines full of pea gravel. Seems she's been eating catpoop in the area where they have rock.......she is on an IV to overhydrate her as well as keep her quiet on pain medication. If she doesn't pass the rocks she'll have to have surgery in a day or two :-(

The part I'm confused about is there was talk of "blood-clot-type" tumor in her stomach...

At any rate sweet Shelby may need surgery and she's 12-13yrs old - the vet says her heart and lungs sound fine and she should not have a problem.

Good thoughts for Erica's pup please.

Titus came to visit me tonight. Scott is working late, so we checked out "Alligator Adventure"(I'm taking him there on vacation next week), and then watched cartoons. He is soooo sweet. He will be 3 in July and is already talking like crazy and making up stories. This is what he told me tonight....Keep in mind that Butler is the only dog Titus has ever known.

He said, "MeMe, when I was a wittle boy, I had a wittle dog. Of course, this peeked my curiosity, so I encouraged him by asking what the dog's name was. "Munchie", he said. He was wao(yellow) and green(Titus' favorite color)". It was very hard to keep a straight face. So I then asked him if Munchie had long hair or short hair like Butt-Butt's. Titus said, "He didn't have any hair, just a head and two ears". "Oh, a Chinese dog", I said. But he just looked at me with a puzzled face. I guess he doesn't know about Chinese things yet. By now I'm about to choke trying not to laugh because he's really into this story. So I then asked him if Munchie slept all snuggled up with him in his bed. To which Titus replied, "No, MeMe, he swept(slept) on a dog bed beside my bed". Is that precious, or what? He just makes me melt.

She had a really nasty growth pop up on her leg, never had one ooze and bleed before...she's going in for surgery this morning. Checking her over I found three other small tumors, two in sites where she's had them off before. One I think is just a tiny nevus, but figure I'll have it off anyway. Poor old Molly has so many scars : ( I wonder when enough will be enough. Want to do right by her, but sometimes it is hard to know the when and the right of things. I'll keep you all posted.

I know I rarely post here these days, but I thought some of you would like to hear this. Gary and I went to Maryland for my grandfather's 80th surprise birthday party (it was great!). Our connecting flight in Chicago on the way home, however, was cancelled. So I called Scot - our wonderful dog-sitter who lets the dogs sleep on top of him while he's there - to let him know we'd be late. He said, "While I've got you on the phone, I have to tell you that Vinnie had a grand mal seizure last night." He was okay and Scot said he was keeping an eye on him. Well, about 8:00 last night, he had another one and I told Scot to get him to the emergency vet for some immediate blood work. I felt that blood work done right away after a seizure could tell us more. The only high levels were the creatine which were only somewhat elevated - as they had been for the past two months. He was given Valium and we were on our way home.

We got home around midnight:30 this morning and he was okay, if a little doped up on the valium to help him relax. He went outside this morning a couple of times (3:00 or so and then again with everyone at 6:15) and slept on the bed with us. Yeah, it was a little cramped, but we both wanted to be near him, so it was okay. Then, this morning at 8:00, we both woke up to a large crash. Jumping out of bed and hitting the floor at a run, Gary and I found Vinnie in the bathroom in another grand-mal seizure. His leg had kicked out and shattered a square tile mirror that had been leaning up against the wall. We got him out of the way of the mirror and spent the next hour and half holding him, comforting him, and trying to keep him from hurting himself. He was laying down, then stood up and was turning around and around and around and around and around and around. He couldn't stop. Finally, he was so exhausted, we managed to get him to lay down. Gary dealt with the other two dogs and got dressed. Came back in and it was my turn to get dressed. We moved him to the bed and called the vet. And took him in shortly thereafter. By the time we got to the vet, it was 9:45.

And he was still seizing.

His temperature was so far over the top, the vet couldn't even read it. It could have been up to 110, but we're guessing 108. The scale only went to 106. We got him sedated to help slow and hopefully stop the seizure and then over to lay in the tub where he was doused with ice cold water for the next 30 minutes in an attempt to get his body temperature down. Slowly it got down to 104 and they moved him to the floor of a kennel on top of a towel. While he was in the tub, he convulsed and passed a Very Bloody stool. We don't know if the blood was from a mucus membrane that ruptured during a seizure or because of body temperature, or if there's further internal damage of which we are not yet aware. He has fans on him to try to use evaporative cooling to keep his body temperature down right now and he's somewhat sedated still. We are home. It's a waiting game now.

And even if his temperature comes down and stabilizes and he himself stabilizes, he may very well have unrepairable brain damage. I will keep you informed as we learn more. I don't hold out much hope, however. But even a little is better than none.

....I know I've been AWOL lately, but things are pretty screwy here at work. My company has been purchased by a Chinese based company called Li & Fung and we are going through some major changes...

Anyhoo.....about three weeks ago Butler decided that he did not like the phone book, especially the yellow pages. When I came home, the book was in pieces and Butler's nose was yellow. A few days later he developed what looked like a fungus on his nose. Apparently he got a paper cut. The vet gave him 7 days of Cipro, which had no affect whatsoever. "Cancer" entered my mind and I freaked, So I took him back to the vet and he was given another 7 days of meds. This time 1000mg of Cephalexin 2X/day. Butler's nose began looking better and at the end of the 7 days was almost healed. One week later, which is this week, there seems to be a recurrence but not as bad as the initial one. Dr. Grant did some research and determined that it is "Hyperkeratosis". I have been scouring the internet all day looking for information. I've come up with pemphigus, nasodigital hyperkeratosis, pyoderma and canine distemper.
Butler was titered in November and was not given the distemper vaccine. I am really worried because no matter what I come up with, none of these things are curable and can have severe affects.

I was given Otomax yesterday to put on his nose. It doesn't seem to bother him, but he has not seemed as energetic for the past couple of days.

Now, everyone knows that Butler's immune system is ultimately zero. Anybody have any suggestions?
