My 86 was doing this for 2 years before I found it. Its an aggravating problem because you never know when and where they will start and stop. And when you get to where you can start tracing it down they are working again.
I looked through almost everything on the bike and then one day while riding signals quit working and I had a thought you suppose its the ignition switch. So I reached up and pushed down on the key with my finger and wow they started flashing. When I returned home I sprayed a lube like wd-40 down into the key hole. Put key in and worked switch some and signals never stopped on me again. This was also a newer ignition switch only a few years old.
