Scott, since you are now familiar with the speedo cable, let me give ya a little hint that will cut down on water getting into the cable housing.

First of all, use a graphite base oil because it is less likely to cake when introduced to water.

Second, if you take a good look at the speedo cable housing, you will see that the outer most cover only goes part way up and stops just below the fairing. Go to a good electronics store and pick up some shrink tubing. Sorry but you will need to remove the cable housing from behind the headlight again. Get some shrink tubing that will 'just' fit over the threaded top end of cable housing. That way it will still shrink enough to be tight. Slid it down to seal the end of the outermost part of the cable housing. I put a long enough length of shrink tubing on to go almost all the way to the top. ALSO, you may want to remove the speedo gear on the wheel and pack grease around the seal that mates up to the wheel. Try to keep any water getting in. When I did this, its seems to keep most of the water out. Water getting into your cable area shouldn't be too much trouble right away. I know it rains a lot up your way so just unscrewing the cable housing at the wheel now and than and drain out any water. IF your cable is well lubed, it should be fine. Its usually the ones that are overlooked that end up breaking.
