Rich,
My brother did the run and crossed down to Newfoundland and back through Cape Breton.
He drove his KLR 650, said the road was very "aggressive" and rough. Also the speed of traffic is very fast on the gravel road and loose gravel everywhere. Said the big trucks did not move off the road much due to soft shoulders, they pretty much stayed close to middle.
Have you been on this road before?
If your XII is old and you don;t care for the paint job, OK, but of you care for the bike, consider the long miles and flying gravel coming at you from your own tires as well as other drivers.
Also make sure you have a full face helmet and consider getting a couple of dust masks(N95) for your self and bring an extra air filter for the bike.
My brother went through 2 air filters due to the dust, and several face masks.
Almost forgot to mention, he carried spare tires and 2 spare tubes for front as well as 2 spare tubes for rear---went through one set of tires and 1 front and both rear tubes.

Something to consider, 1500+ km (1000 miles). lots to think about -no garage or parts in that area.
Are you planning for a support vehicle??? Some camping was required.
