When I bought the bike about 3 yrs ago, it had a worn out set of Dunlops, #405 I think. Drove about 500 miles on those before installing Conti Tours for about $115 each. Noticed vast improvement in handling, cornering - just attributed it to newer tire. Never rode XII with higher priced Avon or Metz, nothing to compare to.
