Scott,

Have your friend start by checking the brake switches to make sure they are tight and adjusted properly. The front brake switch should make 2 clicks when you activate the lever.

then make sure there is no "slop" in the clutch lever as there is a switch there that can cut off the cruise.

It wouldn't hurt to check the connector @ the cruise control box under the false tank. When my 2000 was new the cruise wouldn't work and they couldn't figure out why. Apparently disconnecting and then reconnecting the cruise control box cleared the problem. Your friend mey be getting some corrosion in the connector that is causing intermitent problems.

Also check the cable adjustment @ the carbs. Chris near Kansas City explained how to do the adjustment on the AVA forum here:
