Smokey had this to say in Oct, 2002, on shocks:
the procedure to change the rear shock oil is on pg. 12-10 and 12-11 of the VXII shop manual. i recommend the amsoil "light" grade suspension fluid. if you decide to use another product, use a 5W motorcycle suspension oil. i have seen recommendations on here to go as heavy as 20W, but i wouldn't recommend that. it will slow down the compression and rebound damping of the shocks considerably. the damping will be mis-matched with the spring rate, even if you have maximum air pressure in the shocks. the dials on the shock only control rebound damping, they have nothing to do with compression damping. slow compression damping will make the bike ride rough, slow rebound damping will allow the shocks to pack down over a series of bumps, reducing the available travel. a properly set-up suspension will bottom lightly over the biggest bumps, and will reduce wallowing in bumpy corners. suspensions that are set up too stiff can reduce traction because the forks and shocks will skip over bumps, rather than following the contours of the road.
