I tried the gear change option and it had no real impact on the error. Besides, when you mix-up the gears like that, you're going to see both gears get chewed up eventually.

As I mentioned previously, mine is off by 10 MPH consistantly and not a percent error. I am not the original owner of my bike and the speedo movement has been changed on mine--leading me to believe that might be a major contributor.
