I had simular problems on my '89 about a year after I purchased it. Would'v been about '97 or '98 when this happened. But I had some odd things happen to the starting/charging system. I had hard to start, sometimes clicks, etc. I replaced the battery, then thought maybe the fuel filter so I replaced that, long story short, it turned out that my alternator was bad and causing the problems. Somehow it was acting at times like it was grounding out things, causing low battery drain, etc. I found a used alternator out in California and one Colorado at some motorcycle salvage yards. Finally went with the one from Colorado as they gave me the best deal. Of course this was before I knew about Carl Leo, now I go to him for new or used parts. Anyway the alternator was the root of the cause for what I was experiencing.

Something I would suggest if you haven't already, is to check the battery cable ends, mainly the hot or red cable. In my past experience as a automotive technician, I found these to sometimes corrod inside the cable and will cause some sypttoms like this as the corrosion will not let enough amps through the cable, sure you have 12v when measured but the amps are what is needed to spin the starter fast enough to turn the engine over.

Otherwise I would recommend contacting Carl Leo and tell him all these sypetoms and he can help point you to a cure. He is our GO_TO guy as he is a retired Kawasaki Parts Manager and provides service and great advice and is always willing to share his knowledge with the Voyager Nation. His contact info is on the Wyzard's Classifieds page.
