I know, bad form for this, but I have a chain hoist in my garage rafters that I hook to a webbed sling that I wrap through the grab handles across the passenger seat and lift my '89 up into the air, makes for easy service work and changing rear tires, and I did this when I replaced the rear shocks. If I didn't have those passenger grab handles the I would probably remove the rear seat and wrap the sling across the frame somehow. Using the sling takes the worry out of scratching anything. the sling was one of those nylon webbed flat rope things leftover from my mechanic days.

I did remove the mufflers, at times, to allow more room when I was working underneath the bike.
