Subject: How clunky should the transmission be?

It's a 98', and I know about the straight cut gears and how that makes them clunky when shifting. But just how much? I take it there are no syncros in use? I also notice that when I am liberal with the throttle, it is extra clunky/grindy shifting past 4500 rpms. Is this just the way it is or do I need to take it in for servicing? What kin of servicing could be done if there is a problem? Rebuild?
