Don A volt meter will get you what you want. They come with simple instructions. Basically it is just hookded up to a 12v switched source and the other to ground. I like the led ones very simple and cheap. Only problem is finding a place to mount it. Most mount it in the door where the CB goes. It reads 12v when key is on and as the engine runs it will go to 14v , which shows you the alt is working. If you have a power outlet on your XII you can also just buy a voltmeter/ alternator tester that just plugs into outlet when you want to check it. This is what I use. Gives you condition kof battery and alternator. Many ways of doing it out there. There are many alternator shops out there that can rebuild your alternator rewind or just repair for a reasonable price and, imho, they are better than buying a new one if it can be rebuilt.
