Subject: Engine Problem...Diagnosis?

Esteemed Voyager Nation:

Forgive me for being silent for so long, but I have been very busy. Now, here's today's problem...

I start riding the bike from work to run errands, with temperatures in the low 60's. It accelerates erratically and backfires, then surges. I think it may be a carburetor jets problem, so I pick-up some Sea Foam to put in the tank. Leaving the auto parts store, the headlight goes out, with dash lights out also. Cop pulls me over for no headlight, but accepts my explanation that I have an electrical problem. The fuses are all good. The battery dies and must be jumped. I jump the battery and re-start the engine to head home. Several miles down the road, after more hesitation, surge, and backfiring, the engine quits, and I need another jump. This same thing happens twice more before I finally get it in the garage. I put the trickle charger on the battery for the night.

If it is not the battery, then what is it? The alternator, or perhaps the ignition module? Any advice would help.

Scott
