Subject: I don't think that the team went with real expectations and the fact that we beat a team 6-1 in the world cup is a good acheivement- it's never been bettered by and England side. We may be average, but we play with a togetherness that I've not seen in an England side. The Sweden side you mention are tough, really tough to beat- Holland, France and Italy have all lost competitive matches to them in the last 12 months, we made them look like an average side. All this hindsight "we were average" is possibly true- but you can't knock over acheivement for once.
In reply to: Dom(TO) 's message, "In agreement with Mickey here (I know, I know). England are average. Utterly average. We managed to scrape past Tunisia and Colombia, lost a reserve game against Belgium, beat a bog standard Swedish side thanks to a string of decent saves from Pickford and thrashed Panama (ranked 55 in the world). The whole country, including people who normally couldn't give a stuff about football, start singing 'It's coming home..." and seem to think we've already won the whole thing. Then we meet a properly decent team in the semis, play well for half an hour until the Croatians decide to ratchet it up a bit. We looked lost in extra time and absolutely knackered, despite Gary Neville telling us that if we have to play an extra half an hour England will DEFINITELY win because Croatia will be knackered having played extra time in their previous two matches and because England are younger." on Thursday, July 12, 09:59:32am

  • The 'reserve' game v Belgium is not relevant. Sweeden knocked out Holland, Italy and Germany. Columbia are a good team that chose to play the way they did against us because they thought they had a better chance of winning that way than playing us at football. They qualified at the expense of Chile, who are no mugs themselves. England were not and are are not 'utterly' average. Such a statement on a semi-finalist demeans the whole tournament and all the countries that fell away before the semi-final. • Precisely. Tunisia also the highest ranked African team. No-one is that terrible at the world cup finals and the fact that the historically big teams have all struggled bares that out. Seems some people on here have been willing England to fail. (NT) -- Harry68, Thursday, July 12, 11:02:35am (cpc121248-nmal25-2-0-cust101.19-2.cable.virginm.net/77.97.31.102)
