Subject: Under 21s

Watched quite a bit of the under 21s this summer, particularly England and massive congrats to them, a great achievement to win back to back. However overall I didn’t think the standard was particularly good, there were moements of course, but as you’d expect a lot of these players are on fringes of first teams in top leagues, or play lower, the majority of the best under 21 talent wasn’t there for numerous reasons.

England individually thought Anderson was by a mile the stand out, but he’s just come off a really good season at a top half prem club, only really livramento has similar experience. Elliot scored some goals, but that’s not shown in his Liv stats, albeit he comes off the bench a lot, but I just don’t see a top player in there and wouldn’t go near him for 40+m. I may be wrong, but what’s his best position, out wide last night he looked slow and not athletic enough for the prem, playing more central not sure he’s good enough defensively. The prems pace doesn’t suit him, I’m yet to be convinced by him overall. Stansfield worked his socks off ans you’d think he has a bit of vardy about him, but lacks a yard of pace in comparison and although a solid tournament again I’m yet to be convinced we made a mistake selling him for the price we did. Norton-Cuffy looked interesting, bit like robbo when he joined, a pure athlete, wether he can be polished into a marauding right back time will tell, but he has raw ingredients.

Probably comes across as quite negative given England don’t win a lot and to go back to back is a great effort, but I’d just be weary of being drawn to some of the players, the standard wasn’t great, many are 22 turning 23 soon so leaving the youngster stage, until they show the step up to the prem you can end up paying double for them as they’re English rather than look abroad.
