Please help, I need to know how to line up the Glencar Reel for my exams. It's always gent's left side to top of room but is it his right side to top of the room for this dance? If I have it right side do I number the gent nearest to top number 1? Or do I line up gent left side to top of room and number them 3,2,1...gent 1 being furthest from the top. Please explain. This dance has me so confused. Thanks a lot, much appreciated.

- Question on Antrim Reel -- studyingceilis, Monday, October 08, 10:16am
For the movement "sidestep and heyes"- the dancers have just changed places with sidestep and danced two short threes. When the ladies change places with promenade step, it says the gents dance two short threes. This means the gents do 2 back two threes? That means they would do 4 back two threes in a row (because they do back two threes after sidestep) is this correct?
thanks!

Have received the exam packet and I'm listening to the CD.
All the tunes for the sets are played at traditional speeds, or at least close to HP 113 or Jig 73.
Question is: in practical dancing portion, are we allowed to do our non-trad sets at the speeds we designate, or do the examiners choose the speeds?
(Worried about my speed 76 Blue-Eyed Rascal and whether or not I need to think of some faster steps for a faster speed Blue-Eyed).

- Ceili papers and practical dancing 2013 -- Allison, Monday, November 05, 5:38pm
Just completed my first ceili paper... and I might have squeezed out a 50%. :)
Question:
They asked me to name two dances that had a "Link Arms" movement. I listed Fairy Reel and Rakes of Mallow, only to realize when I finished and checked the book that in the Fairy Reel it is called "Gents Centre and Link Arms" and in Rakes of Mallow it's called "Link Arms in Centre."
So, a better answer would have been 16-Hand Reel, Duke Reel, Bonfire Dance... there are others, I'm sure.
My question is: would I have been counted incorrect for listing Fairy Reel and Rakes of Mallow?
About the practical dancing portion:
I plan to know the "competition" length of each traditional set (including Jockey to the Fair, King of the Fairies, Three Sea Captains, etc in 2013), but no more than that.
Am I on the right track, or do I need to dig up Olive Hurley videos and learn more steps and sets for each set dance?
Thank you!!!

- writing out ceilis -- L, Friday, April 06, 11:57am
As I am writing out the ceilis, I find that I am often wording things slightly different, or breaking down the bars differently. For instance when writing out the 4-hand reel first figure, I wrote:
-Leading couple takes inside hands and advances to meet opposite couple (2)
-leading man retires to place and stands idle while partner performs the 'figure of 8' by passing between opposite couple, going first around the lady and then around opposite man (4)
-ladies then go to leading man and form a ring of 3 (2)
instead of:
-Leading couple takes inside hands and advances to meet opposite couple (2)
-leading man retires to place and stands idle while partner performs the 'figure of 8' by passing between opposite couple, going first around the lady and then around opposite man then ladies then advance to leading man and form a ring of 3 (6)
Also - I wrote, "ladies then advance to leading man and form a ring of 3" and the book has, "the two ladies now advance to leading man and take hands in 'ring of 3'" And as I write more and more out I have slightly different wording like this. It seems silly to mark off for something so little, but just checking!
So, I am basically wondering, is that a big deal? Will I get points off? Does it have to be word-for-word exactly?
Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!!

B. Name five dances in which the same chain movement in performed (is this the ladies chain???)
C. The # of bars it takes to complete the Full Chain in the GLENCAR REEL and Link Arms in the BONFIRE DANCE

- Choosing a school name -- No name, Monday, April 16, 8:14am
So I'm just starting out with my new school, and I need some sage wisdom. I am really stumped as to what to call my school. I don'twant to teal anyone eldest good idea, I just need guidelines so I'm not kicking myself years (or even months) down the road.
Here are the rules I've already set for myself:
1. Where I am at I am really interested in a name that will jump out at prospective families as "Irish" without being cheesy.
2. I can't do my own name (either it is already taken or very very non Irish sounding)
3. I've been to a school with an Irish Gaelic name, and it has been
SLAUGHTERED by people in our community, so I'd rather not go that direction.
Any other experiences or rules I should be applying here?

Apart from being really really long to write out & somewhat tricky to teach to younger dancers, what is unusual about it?? Consecutive sevens in the centre is about the only serious answer I can come up with!

Okay, so if on the exam I am asked, "How many bars are in the Four-Hand Reel?" do I answer in this manner (the numbers in parantheses correspond to the numbers given to these mvmnts in Ar Rinci Foirne):
Bars for (1) Lead Around, (2) Body, (3) First Figure by leading couple, (3) First Figure by Opposite couple, (2) Body, (4) Second Figure, (2) Body, (5) Finish
Is that correct? Do you have to include the counts for the COMPLETE dance (with all repeats of they body), as written in the Blue Book?

Following my own investigation, billions of persons all over the world receive the business loans at different banks. Thus, there's a good chance to get a college loan in all countries.

- HELP! IN NEED OF TEACHER NEAR BOSTON -- MIchelle, Thursday, March 17, 3:22pm
I was studying to take the exam right out of college when my dancing teacher passed away. Not only was it a devastating loss, but it left my sister and I without a teacher to help us with ceilis and set pieces. I am looking for a dancing teacher North of Boston who might be willing to teach my a few set pieces and ceilis. I am willing to pay and I learn very quickly. I was championship dancer from the age of 5. I am now 28, but I have not forgotten my own steps, so I just need help getting this dream of mine realized. IF anyone knows ANYONE in the area that can help I would really appreciate it. My teacher's name was Josephine Fitzmaurice Moran!
Thanks,
Michelle

- Hi I was wondering if anyone could help. I have tried using Audacity with no luck. To say my computer skills are limited is an understatement. What I am hoping to attempt is a recording of myself saying the name of the set with the number of bars etc before it. So that I can listen to it in the car and on my Ipod. So far I have not had much luck despite numerous attempts. Any Help would be very much appreatiated. Thanks in anticipation of any help -- TCRG hopeful, Sunday, July 10, 5:50am

- Looking for a mentor in Chicao -- Amanda, Tuesday, April 19, 9:55pm
So I'm living in the Chicago land area and plan are trying to take my TCRG test in Georgia in Sept of 2012. I'm very nervous because although my studying and practicing is going very well, I do not have any help from a TC or group of dancers. Is this something I can just call a studio and ask "Is there a TCRG willing to help me" or should I start taking lessons again and then bring it up after a while. After going to college I feel so out of the Irish Dance loop, and now I'm afraid I won't be let back in. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

- Getting Started -- Christina, Sunday, March 13, 7:52am
I'm now finished with college, working and looking for a sort of "new direction" in life. I get a lot of joy out of teaching Irish Dancing, and enjoy absorbing information about it.
I really love the idea of having my own school some day, and now seems like a good time to start, since nothing really holds me back.
That being said,
I'm a preliminary level dancer.(not very competitive)
I know all of the traditional sets, and of course reels, slip jigs, hornpipes, treble jigs, etc.
I only know one non-traditional set, so I know I need to get cracking on that.
I have learned a handful of the Ceili's.
I know I need to purchase An Rince Foirne. Is the one from Celtic Cottage up to date?
Which CD is best for the set dance tunes? (especially for when it comes to the music portion of the exam)
I know Olive Hurley's Ceili DVDs have some errors, but overall, were they helpful?
I'm most concerned about learning all of the ceilis. I feel comfortable teaching and dancing steps.
Any advice? Where should I go from here? I feel like jumping in is the hardest part.
Thank You =)

- Exam Craziness :O) -- Me, Sunday, May 20, 4:29am
Hello,
I am off to Dublin next week and thought I'd share with you a little preperation tip I've come up with for learning the ceilis. I downloaded 'audacity' free from the internet and recorded myself saying all the ceili dances from ARF on different tracks. The programme is reasonably user friendly and I was able to export all the tracks to my itunes. So now, I have me reading all the ceili dances on my ipod - which I've been wondering around the house listening to! Best of all, after one listen my score on a past paper was 91% (my personal best so far being 65%) Am very pleased with myself and thought I'd share it with you for any other 'audio' learners out there :O)
I am slightly worried about my levels of sanity. 'back and back and back he goes cos Bonaparte's retreating...' just one of my many crazy ways of remembering the set dances! :O)
Hope you're all feeling sprightly for Dublin folks! Good luck.
xx
