Has anyone taken the adjudicator's exam and would you please share your experience? Specifically the mini-feis and interview, I've heard those are rough. How did you prepare? Thanks!

- A fellow TCRG applicant and myself are planning to get together on Saturday, August 23 to practice teaching/learning the ceili dances. This will be held in Lancaster, PA. There will be no TCRG present, this is simply an opportunity to get some hands-on experience. We would like to invite everyone interested to attend! -- Crystal, Tuesday, July 22, 4:05pm
Please email me if interested. I am asking $10 per person to help cover studio costs, and I would like to know as soon as possible how many people are interested, because I will invite some dance students to attend if I need to in order to make sure we have enough people for 8-hands. I do know all the ceili dances (well, to the best of my ability, I haven't taken the test yet!) so if you are just starting in the learning process, you are welcome to come and just learn! If you are taking the test soon, you are welcome to try your hand at teaching any of the dances you are comfortable with.

- Past schedules? -- wannabe, Wednesday, July 23, 8:36am
At the risk of sounding impatient, which I'm trying not to be, I'm wondering if past candidates would mind sharing a rough idea of exam schedules at past exams? Do they usually follow a similar format or does it change completely from exam to exam?
I'll start with what I know! October 2006 in Toronto had some candidates teaching Thursday evening. I had the written and music on Friday morning, own dancing Friday afternoon, and solo/ceili teaching on Saturday morning. I think the teaching sections were all throughout the day on Saturday, and then the mini-feis for ADCRG candidates was on Sunday.
Anyone else?

Danced for 5 years beginning in my 20's, got to Open/Prizewinner. Been a teaching assistant for the last two years, and it would rock my world to get my TCRG. Advice, comments, questions, anything "realistic" would help...I'm ready to sit down and start studying for it, but not sure if I've been dancing long enough, if I'm up to "par" being in OPW, etc. Success stories would be awesome! - Agree. This board has always been a really nice supportive place to visit, Lately some vicious little weasle has come on being sarcastic and nasty. Maybe that person should hang it up and wait for the grandkids. I call people like you dreamstealers. To the OP GO FOR IT! If you have the passion in your heart, give it a go. (NT) -- You have my support!, Sunday, July 20, 5:06am
- I honestly don't think it's impossible for anybody to do it! If you have less dancing experience, you may have to spend some extra time studying to get up to par, but it's certainly very doable. Set a goal (you might want to plan on studying at a slow but steady pace for 2 years?) and divide all the test material up into steady monthly goals, and you can certainly do it! Just read a post on dance.net about becoming a irish dance teacher. One person from a great achool on the east coast has said she has been talking to "Sean" of the WIDA on opening up the first school for WIDA in the US.

- My sponser used me as a teacher for when she was unable to make it (most of the time) and then also to teach her daughter hard steps (that she as tc was unable to teach, but that I had danced and therefore could pass on), spent the rest of the time putting me down in class in front of her adult dancers. Hello,
I am trying to start putting together Ceili teams for the upcoming Oireachtas AND Worlds- can some kind TC/AD let me know what ages come under the heading of MINOR, JUNIOR and SENIOR girls Ceili for the Worlds?
I am thinking that I may have an U15 girls ceili for Oireachtas, but they would be a year older by Worlds- what competition would that be?
Also,is it the rule that 50% of the team must be of the actual age they are competing under, and that the other 50% can be younger?
Thank you! With no syllabus yet, trying hard to plan!

- Definitely learn the whole of the sets. You could be asked to dance a 1st and 2nd step of a trad. You would be mortified if you had only learned the first section. ......More Inside....... -- I just passed TCRG., Monday, July 07, 1:31am
- I've been preparing for a couple of years now and never ever heard about the requirement to know the whole sets, neither has my teache who prepares me and she has produced many TCRGs! It's probably good to know them for your own knowledge but I've never heard about them being needed for the exam. (NT) -- rf, Monday, July 07, 3:28am
- If you re-read my post you will see I did not say it was a "requirement of the exam" - I said it is a good idea to know them all - surely any teacher would WANT to know all the parts and not be ignorant of them. I was prepared (along with many many others) by a respected examiner and if she gives this advice, it can hardly be wrong. As a teacher, you should know all the parts of these trads, irrespective of whether it is an exam requirement. (NT) -- My Opinion, Monday, July 07, 3:42am
- Thanks! Yes, I thought it was a good idea to know them all through anyway, and it's a good tip to do them simply for stamina! I just wanted to be doublely sure. Thanks again! (NT) -- Jess, Monday, July 07, 6:20am
- Good Luck Jess with the exam. To the other poster, excuse my slight indignation at you questioning the need to do all through sets. I must have needed caffiene at that point! We're all in it together! (NT) -- ., Monday, July 07, 7:35am
- I think it's great that you remind us all that the point of being a designated TCRG is that we will be expected to preserve and pass down the tradition of Irish dance, so there really are no 'shortcuts' and we should all strive to learn what we need to as thoroughly and completely as possible. And when I (hopefully) gain my credentials, the best I can hope for is for someone to speak as highly of me as the above poster did of her teacher. What a great reward! (NT) -- yes, that old, Monday, July 07, 3:25pm
- A message to all TCs (or anyone who feels like sharing). -- Thanks for your thoughts, Wednesday, July 09, 4:09am

I am a senior dancer and I am considering eventually getting my TCRG. I was hoping to receive some opinions on what was useful in preparing for your TCRG and how long you spent studying. Also what did it take to first open up your dance school, and then make it successful?

Hi everyone - we have rescheduled our ceili day and will be running an open workshop type event on Sunday 10th August in Birmingham.
If anyone is about to take the exam or just started studying - it will be really worthwhile. The plan is to dance all of the 30 dances in ARF and then to take turns to teach.
If you are interested - please email me at omalleyirishdance at hotmail.co.uk (with the at sign and no spaces)

- May 2008 experience -- Julie Newcombe (Older Dancer), Thursday, July 03, 2:26pm
Written and music: As expected. Reading book and watching Olive DVD'S side by side really helped me remember. Also do try Mock Papers. You may leave the room when finished. The music you listen to clrg ceili cd through and through and test yourself. May seem basic but their are alot of similar dances. I separated them with specific memorable points in each similar piece.
Dancing: 2 steps of either reel or slip jig. Then 2 steps of either hornpipe or heavy jig. One dancer at a time. BEWARE, boys are asked to do slip jig. Next was three set dances out of the nine you chose. I chose 5 jig and 4 hornpipe. I chose 3 similar jig dances in terms of bars and choreographed 2 dances between the 3. It sames time if choreographing own steps. Also did same for hornpipe sets. You may practice outside room while inividuals go in to dacne sets. the panel of 3 choose each next set to dance after you have danced the previous set. Last was traditional sets. Normal competition length in sets of two, three or four dancers.
Teaching: Last was teaching. For solo teaching the panel pick the 2 dancers. You will teach the heavy step first then a light step, but to 2 different sets of 2 dancers. You should first ask the dancers to show you a step of their own. Gives you an idea of the difficulty they can dance. Then show the dancers the step you are going to teach them and feel is appropriate for them by dancing it first. You may or may not get to teach the whole step depending on how easy the dancers pick up the step.
Next is ceili. The panel either say a dance from the start or a part of a dance by name and you must choose, organise and teach the dancers all on your own. KEY!!! Learn the music as you have to sing it, both for solo's and ceili.
Focus on carriage and and fet etc for solos and ceili. also praise children when they are doing well and bulid confidence. You will be asked to teach bits from 2 ceili dances. Picked on the spot. AGHHHHHHHHHHHHH! Good luck MANCHESTER!

- They play the sets all the way through once. Then the solo tunes (which are once only). Then start back at the beginning of the set tunes. I did lots of "mock" music exams and learned the differences between some similar tunes, by differentiating between the bars and timings. This especially helped with the new sets. Got 100% in the music section. (NT) -- Good Luck, Friday, July 04, 10:50am
- What do you mean by "solo" sections? I thought the sets were the only music quizzed? Or do you mean the step part of the sets? (NT) -- No name, Friday, July 04, 11:46am

For YOUR OWN DANCING, and TEACHING STEP DANCING, do you have to make up like a million different steps on your own? Like you have to make up two different steps for reel, two for double jig, etc. plus more steps for the 9 set dances for YOUR OWN DANCING. I get that. Do you make up different steps again for the TEACHING portion? or can you use the steps from YOUR OWN DANCING and teach them? Also what do they mean when they say steps for different levels? Do you have to make up two reel, jig, etc. steps for beginner, two for novice, two for prizewinner, two for prelim, and two for open? That sounds like A LOT of steps to make up on your own!! Please help!!

Can someone break down how the solo teaching portions of the test work?
* Do you pick 2-4 dancers after seeing them dance a step or two in a larger group?
* Does the panel choose who you teach?
*Are there other TC candidates doing this at the same time with the same group of dancers (for example is there the possibility that both you and someone else might want to teach the same group of kids?)
* Once you have the group of dancers you are teaching do you have them dance a step to assess their level (to decide what step they should learn) or is this done earlier when you "pick" the dancers to teach?
* Does the panel expect you to show them the entire step before teaching? Should you also show the dancers the whole step prior to teaching?
* Do you have to start at the beginning of the step? (some steps have a tricky movement in the middle that you need to go over before teaching the rest of the step that might be pretty basic)
* How much time do you have to teach each step and are you expected to complete the step?

I havnt been to a competition in 15 years and have forgotten how i used to dance it.
Also, i dont even think my A-Level results took this long to come out from the last exam. Is anyone else a little frustrated at the time it has taken so far?

- TCRG exam at 40+ ?! -- yes, that old, Wednesday, May 28, 3:15pm
Am I crazy to be considering this exam at my age? For the record, I am quite fit and can still perform the same set pieces and steps I did in my teens (that should be good news to you young ladies). I've been away from ID for a couple of decades (took a few weeks of classes about 11 years ago when I first married and would have loved to have kept it up, but we purchased a home in the country soon after and moved far from any metropolitan area). Amazingly, I still practice often -- it's the best exercise!
I now have a daughter who loves the music and dance -- but of course, the nearest TCRG school to me would be over an hour's drive. I'd love to teach students in the traditional manner that my own former teacher did. I probably know about 50% of the practical material now (sets, steps and ceilis) and the music part would be okay.
Thoughts? Is this early dementia setting in? Has anyone over 40 ever attempted and passed their exam?

- How long did it take you to "accumulate" enough steps and sets to take the test? At what pace did you learn them? I have a few oldies, but not enough. - How many candidates... -- getting ready, Friday, June 06, 8:36am
...make their sets somewhat interchangeable? As in, you have a limited numbers of steps/sets/endings rather than having 4 or 5 distinct, complete and different steps and sets? I'm weighing the pros and cons of each approach. I currently have 9 completely different full sets choreographed, but I feel like I'm spreading myself too thin in preparing and am worried about being able to perfect each one. On the one hand, there's less "thought" involved because each one is distinct, so it's a more physical process, but on the other hand, making them interchangeable would require less physical preparation to perfect them while possibly requiring more "thought."
What do you think? If you're going to dance (at maximum) two of one type of set (jig or hornpipe), is it better to have 9 distinct sets all perfected so you hear the name of the set and have a complete dance in mind, or is it better to have 2 different step parts ready, 2 different "set" steps ready, and then just adjust the endings to fit the number of bars? For example, if your jig sets are 8-16, 8-12, 8-20, 8-14...you'd have two 8-bar step parts, two 8-bar set parts, and a mix of "endings" ranging from 4 bars to 12 bars.
If you've already taken the exam, which route did you take and how did you feel it went? If you're preparing for the exam, which are you planning?
