[> [> That's actually not true. Several non-champ dancers have passed the exam. It's more about having fantastic basics (turnout, rhythm, etc) than the fancy-ness of your steps. -- c, Sunday, October 11, 11:11am

But you should be able to choreograph and teach a champ-level step, of course. It's just not necessary to have gone to the Nationals to pass your own dancing section of the exam.

Having taken the exam myself, I have seen all styles and ages and abilities in the exam. They tell you before you dance that they are not looking for the best dancers and not to try to impress them. They are looking for solid dancing ability.

It does help to have a higher level of ability because you will execute the basics better, but believe me, many have passed the exam and never made it to a major.

Actually some of the best teachers I know were never really successful in competition. Understanding it and doing it are completely different things! Ever heard of the phrase "if you can't do, teach"?
