Good Question: Should Prince Harry Go To Iraq?

(WCCO) At a time when the British are preparing to withdraw many of their troops from Iraq, they are about to send one of their most high profile soldiers to the fight.

Prince Harry of the British Royal Family is being deployed to Iraq and could become the first royal to see combat in 25 years.

"I think its a good symbol that he's representing his country,” said one man in Minneapolis.

Others question whether Harry’s presence would be a risk to both him and his unit.

"He's going to be at risk in a lot of different ways,” said Dr. Larry Jacobs who teaches at the Humphrey Institute at the University of Minnesota. "This is not necessarily a great thing for the royalty and the military because he is going to be so vulnerable. Al Queda or one of the other terrorist groups would love to take out the prince. Imagine the media bonanza on that."

"I think its an unnecessary risk,” said another man in the Twin Cities.

"He's not just any old soldier over there,” said Jacobs. “Everybody knows that, including the terrorists and that's going to put a burden on the military."

"I think its very commendable for him to step up to the plate and go over there and fight,” said a woman in Minneapolis.

The message his willingness to serve sends may trump the security issues.

"One of the big issues in America is the burden being shared,” said Dr. Jacobs. “You've got just a few members of congress who have got kids in Iraq. The military families are the ones who's really bearing the burden here. The message coming out of England is even the prince serves, no one is above the fight, we are all affected, and the service and sacrifice can be shared."

It could be the making of this young man. He's been something of a loose cannon with his Nazi Halloween costume, his drinking and rumored drug use. He has a big responsibility as squadron leader. It's much differnet from a title he didn't earn. I think it will change him for the better.
