The rough, chuckhole pavement was starting to begin during that year. The state of Arizona and the federal government deemed this original, historic piece of pavement passe..

This would be a rough ride in 1954 as I can fully attest when it would concern itself east of the Painted Desert and west of Lupton, Arizona...

The 45 mile stretch of road was on the exinction list of replacement and upgrading....

Sorry about your restriction on the Dead Bridge concrete section, LB

[> [> [> [> [> [> [> [> LB, at the time of 1971.. U.S. Hwy 66/Interstate 40.. California -- Leland Gaunt, 02:58:19 04/05/12 Thu (netblock-208-127-102-105.dslextreme.com/208.127.102.105)

LB, at the time of 1971..

Interstate 40 would have a 92 mile gap of sorts. At Ludlow, California, Interstate 40 would end for awhile. The state would route you onto Route 66 at the time at Ludlow, eastbound. You would frequent the Mojave Desert hamlets, towns and switching stations of Siberia, Bagdad, Amboy, Bola, Cadiz, (Chambliss) Danby, Essex. They would reroute you on Interstate 40 at Mountain Summit with the freeway resuming eastward afterwards. There would be an open gap as Interstate 40 freeway was under construction between Ludlow eastward into the Mountain Summit area..

Afterwards when the gap was completed, U.S. 66 shields would eventually "disappear" from the former U.S. Highway 66...

1970/1971..

Interstate 40 eastbound would end. At the time, the state of California would reroute to existing Route 66 eastbound, the old highway at a later date..

The signage would read:

"END FREEWAY
"EXIT

EAST
NEEDLES
KINGMAN
FLAGSTAFF"

[Just some trivial history of the 1970/1971 past...]
