In my experience, those who trumpet inside connections just wish they had them. I was quite clear about my source: when MAS returned, I remember reading posts here about how torqued-off Katz sounded on the air. The new on-air happiness could easily be fake: I've successfully faked that before, and I'm a rookie. And I've known plenty of miserable thin people with great tans. (Hey, I AM in Florida...) I enjoy his show every day too, but I would not be surprised if he decides to dump WPHT soon. He's too good to be limited by those people.
