Liam drew in a sharp breath at the sensation of the sword piercing his body. It didn't hurt as much as he thought it would. In fact it felt about as bad as a stomach ache, or heart burn, except for the feel of the cool blade that ran through him. He couldn't think. He couldn't feel. After a few seconds, there was no pain, emotional or physical. He felt only a sudden longing to sleep, a tiredness he had never experienced before. He wasn't scared. Someone was there. Silver was there, and he was... at peace.

"If I don't find out anything," he said with his last breaths, "at least I won't havta live with myself and the pain, anymore. One last favor: would you sing something for me, Silver? I always wanted to die while listening to 'Mr. Tambourine Man.' W-would you...?"

Silver sighed. It wasn't much to ask for. She dropped the sword, knelt down beside him, and sang.

"Hey, Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me. I'm not sleepy and there ain't no place I'm going to..."

Liam joined in with his last breath. "Hey, Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me. In the jingle-jangle morning, I'll c-come following..." Liam stopped, and died, with a content smile on his weary face, staring at his killer almost lovingly.

"...You." As Silver finished the song, she closed Liam's viridian eyes and layed him don upon the clay. She placed the sword on his chest and clasped his cold hands on top of the handle. She arose, and used her Fire Materia to encarve, for all time, a short epitaph in the clay above his head. She then walked off, in serch of Star.

The night had passed, and Iggy and Amanda had come for his second challenge with Star. His opponent came, and was about to attack when she saw the body of an auburn haired boy, not much younger than Iggy was. A very long sword had covered a thick gash in his chest cavity, and he lay in a pool of his blood.

The oddest thing of all was that he wore a smile similar to that found on the Mona Lisa, as though he was happy to die. Written in the earth above his head, in English, Japanese, Latin, and Ximian, were the words:
LIAM "SATO RYOMA" DUBARRE
1987-2003
MAY HE, IN DEATH, FIND THE PEACE HE SO ZEALOUSLY SOUGHT IN LIFE.

^_^

Thank you, Silver.
