Well... as she said, we use them when we have had sick birds. Also, when we had chicks that were very young, they loved to crawl and lay on the heated gel packs. We heated them up just hot enough to be comfortable, then we placed them in a plastic bag (so they wouldn't get soiled) and wrapped that in a paper towel. They love it. I'm not sure about a "heat pad" though. Are you talking about what people use for reptiles? I am sure that would work. We just used gel packs because we had them. No need to spend too much extra money. lol ;-)
