Subject: Caution...

This morning, when I was cleaning the cages, I had a bad feeling when I looked into one of the cages. Dumbdumb, one of my silver males, was behind the little "house" we have in his cage, and unlike he normally does, was not moving. I moved the house, and found him dead. He looked like he was sleeping, but unfortunately, he wasn't. I was very confused as to how this happened. I kept trying to think of how it could. I mean, there was food and water, and while he was almost four years old, there was nothing wrong with him. But when I was cleaning out his old water bottle, I realized what happened. For our wire cages, we have hanging water bottles with the straw that comes down that is blocked by a ball. These are very common. Anyways, that little ball had gotten stuck at the top of the straw and restricted the water flow. Since this has never happened before, I had no idea to check for it. So, I beg of you, if you are using these hangin bottles, to make sure that the ball is moving freely daily, because it can apparently get stuck at any time. And that's all I have to say about that.
