It sounds a little like something I have had with my birds. 2 of my buttons had a problem that sounds similar, they couldn't stand & seemed to have balance problems, I think it may have been viral, although the vet didn't have a clue what the problem was. I also had a finch with the same problem. All 3 I treated successfully & they made a full recovery. The Finch died of old age a few months ago & one of my Quails, Smidge is still going strong, although she occasionally gets a little off balance when scratching her head. She was very near to death & didn't eat or drink for days, just slept constantly for a week, almost comatose, I really didn't think she'd make it, but with lots of TLC she pulled through, so there is always hope. What I did was separate them from the others, & I put them in a small tank with a heat lamp on them (You would be surprised what a difference a bit of warmth can do for an unwell bird) & I put a soft flannel in there for comfort & to prop them up, which I changed daily to stop her getting covered in poop. I put fresh water in there, close to her & a bowl with crumble, eggfood & hemp seeds, plus a little mashed up hard boiled egg twice a day for energy. Alot of people swear by sugar water, it can give an ill bird a little energy boost. I wouldn't recommend feeding them water with a dropper as it's very easy for a bird to aspirate (Breathe in water) this is usually always fatal, you can tell this has happened as they will make clicking noises when they breathe, & they die slowly. Try encouraging them to drink by dipping your (Clean)finger into the water & then touching the drop on the end of your finger to their beak, if they seem to want it hold the bowl of water under their chin & see if they seem thirsty. You can also dip the very tip of their beak into the water & see if they will take a drink, again, be careful not to let them take water into their lungs. The heat is very important, that way an ill bird doesn't have to sap its energy keeping its body temperature up. I kept the heat lamp on them constantly for at least several days, even a whole week, until they started to improve. keep them in a quiet room, indoors, away from noisy distractions & check them regularly. Try to encourage them to drink & eat as often as possivble. I also gave them mealworms, they seemed to give them a boost too. I hope this helps. let us know how Spiffy gets on, & if you can give us any more info on symptoms that would be helpful. Any worries or questions, just post. I will check the board regularly & hopefully we can get Spiffy through this.
