Hi Kristin-

I only use the bedding. Pine shavings or equine pine pellets that once you moisten it a little, it makes it "fluffy". I do not use anything else. They make a big enough mess with the bedding. I don't see myself cleaning sand from all over the floor. That would be another thing I gotta clean. :)

Now that I said my opinion on dust bathing... I should say the FACTS of dust bathing :)

Apparently (no matter how much I hate the dust bathing-cleaning-afterwards thing... :) dust bathing is a good way for some terrestial birds to bathe in. It does several things. In the wild they dust bathe to "cool off". The dust provides a thin layer of cool dust. Also, it has been said that in the wild they normally bathe where there is the presence of ants. The ants are tossed on the birds back and they feed on the mites and parasites that are present on the birds. I thought those were really cool facts and I wanted to share them with you since we are already on that subject. :) I hope you don't mind. :)
