Well, our "northern" quails, partridges and chickens really kick up the sand and have a blast, literally!!! They just love their sand baths and it's good conditioning for their feathers plus the added bonus of parasite control(they preen for so long after their baths). The thing about the ants is interesting for sure. The Northern Flicker(woodpecker species)for example, actually grabs ants with it's bill and wipes the ants over its feathers...it is believed that the acid excreted from the ants actually works as a natural insecticide....now who wants to really call them bird brains now! We humble humans lack the instincts that most other creatures have...certainly counts for alot in my books:)
