I don't think that bathing in his food will hurt him at all. We've had birds do that from time to time, in their food bowls or in their bedding, but they never kept it up. I believe I remember someone saying their buttons bathed in chinchilla dust (is there such a thing?). I don't think Fred would know the difference between his food and another substance, even if you provided it. Maybe doing this makes him more comfortable, while he is without his feathers. He might stop once they come back in.
