I'm a beginner, but I would recommend getting a mated pair. Perhaps an older couple who have been together for a long time and already worked out any differences. It is a delight to listen to the mating calls and watch the male catch and feed crickets to the female.

If you can find a breeder in your area, you may be able to purchase a mated pair that is past the height of laying, a perfectly good pair whose female doesn't sit on eggs, etc.

I wouldn't get multiple birds of the same sex unless you are ready to do some rearranging (including building new pens) as problems arise. If you want to make a real hobby of it, nothing compares to ordering eggs by mail and hatching them in an incubator.

Good luck!
Jennifer
