My husband cut around the top of the plastic top, filled with window screen and anchored the screen with a wood frame and brads. I cushioned the hard portion of the top with pillow filler so they don't injure their heads when boinking.

It seems to be working well for us. I like this arrangement because you don't have the messy shavings all over the floor.
