What a story! I'm glad you rescued the little guy!!

Just a suggestion: If you get him a girl you don't have to let them breed. Just take the eggs away. You can actually hardboil and eat them. :-) If you don't want to do that, you can mash the hardboiled eggs and feed them back to the buttons. The are a very good source of protein.

If you want to make your guy even tamer try to entice him with mealworms. They absolutely love them and will eat them out of your hand.

By the way: DON'T mix him with a parakeet/budgie. They wouldn't buddy up. If you're lucky they'll ignore each other if the cage is big enough but neighter one of them will benefit from that relationship. Quail are just completely different type of birds.

And I agree: Birds aren't suitable as class pets. (I don't like the idea of "class pets" anyway. Unless it's a teacher's pet and the hamster/gerbil/turtle/fish has a home when school is out.)
