I can't explain her erratic behavior, but I do know that if you cage the female with the male, she may develop a distance from you and not allow you to handle her as much. It sounds as though she had attached herself to you as her mate (the sounds she makes when you come close), and if you place her with your male she may attach herself to the male instead.

I had a female that did that very thing after I felt sorry for her being alone and I lost that closeness with her. She became less tame again. I had her sleeping on me when I rested at night and she let me rub her neck during our close time. She was very tame; I really missed that.
