Hi Rhonda,

I'm sorry to hear about Nutmeg. I just got an email from Chris asking if I could help. I've had a hen who had a couple of mild prolapses but this sounds quite bad if it was bleeding. I've also had a little look about on some sites for more info. You may want to take Nutmeg to a vet if you can get an appointment but in the meantime there are a few things you can do for her. Firstly the hospital cage setup is a great idea. If there is any chance she may be eggbound the heat will obviously help her. I don't know if she's still laying? Obviously keeping her away from the other birds and quiet is good too, but you already know all that. As Chris said, keep her on something clean to prevent infection. Also try to keep the affected area moist, a site I just looked on recommends KY jelly, it's important to use a water based lubricant and not an oil based one and it's important not to let the prolapsed tissue dry out or it can die off from what I just read. Another thing to try if it doesn't distress her too much is to try and gently push the prolapse back in. You can try this with your pinky finger or a clean Q tip. Make sure your hands are very clean, wash your hands with disinfectant, clean her vent area with a warm mild salt water solution and apply some of the water based lubricant to her vent area. Then apply some to your clean finger (Or the clean Q tip) and very gently and gradually push the prolapse back up. She might find this painful and struggle and tense up so don't try and push it back in in one go, you may have to push it little by little over the course of 5 minutes or so. If it does come back out after a while you may have to repeat this more than nce. In the case of my hen I had to do this 3 times and after that it stayed put, she recovered from it but I limited the amount of light she got after that to make sure she wasn't laying for quite a while afterwards to give her body time to heal and recover. It's also important that she has extra calcium, if you have any liquid calcium see if you can make her take some in some water. I'll paste the links to the sites I've just looked on, have a read through for more info on the causes and treatments. I really hope Nutmeg recovers, if I remember rightly she is one of Thomas' favourites. Hopefully you can get a vet appointment ASAP, but even if you don't manage to push the prolapse back in just keep it moist until you can get her to the vet. Good luck Rhonda, have a read of these sites when you get a chance.
