I also think it would look better in a natural setting with soil and plants. I thought if i had put in more than 3 inch layer of soil I could mix it up once in a while and get the droppings underneath, then i would only water the spots where the plants are and add in more soil here and there.
I would assume that in an aviary, soil would be acceptable. Putting in the aspen shavings would mean using a whole lot each time! I guess its trial and error for me as well. Putting in wood shavings in my four feet long terrarium would be fine but i sure will have to use alot if i were to clean it per week. That would not be economical..:(
