I think the helping is a personal thing. I help if the chick is stuck, this chick was stuck, hence making one big dirty hole, insted of a nice chipped circle. I do know the difference between a pip and a hatch and have succesfully hatched quite a few eggs before with no issues.
I will add, since everyone is making a deal about humidity, that when I opened the incubator I also added a paper towel soaked in warm water, this is one way to keep the humidity high when you open the lid and it returned to full within under a minute.
I do not candle eggs or do anything else with them, but I refuse to watch a chick struggle when frankly there's no need.
