I got 4 young button quails about a month ago (I'm also first time quail owner), 2 boys and 2 girls. One of the boys wasn't shy from the start and ate mealworms out of my hand after a few days already. The 2 girls needed a little longer, but both eat from my hand now as well. The other boy is still pretty shy and does it only occasionally. Still all 4 don't really like me to hold or touch them, so I don't.
I breed my own mealworms and give them small to medium sized ones. I also noticed that they can't eat them when they are too big. (I replied a little while back to a post about raising mealworms, you can see the posts still on this page a little farther down.)
I agree with Don. Don't give up, they just need some time to get used to you.
By the way: I give them mealworms only once a day, but talk to them (and my other birds) daily in the morning when I change water and food, and spend time with them in the evening. (In the weekend also a few times during the day.) I guess the more time you spend around them (even if it's not feeding but just talking to them) the faster they get used to you. (I wish I could spend all day with my pets, but unfortunately I have to go to work too. ;-)
