Well, the problem is that my pet sitter may not know, because she laid them under a hollow log and my pet sitter said she saw no eggs in the cage on her notes, so she never noticed them. Also, whenever I change water, she comes out from under it and I'm sure she did the same with the pet sitter. My hen has actually dug up the carefresh bedding around her and the male seems to be protecting her from outside the log while she sits. I couldn't be more shocked really. I lifted it and checked them when I first saw them, but haven't done anything since. My female is very high strung still when it comes to my hands. However their food and water is on the one side of the cage, so it might be ok. The water dish is actually a silo style and only has a small opening at the bottom, nothing a chick could fall in. I mean it would have to hold it's mouth and nose under the water on purpose to drown in it, and even then I don't think it's possible. How much space will the chicks need? I have a smallish cage right now, a bigger cage that needs to be finished before use. I however do have a larger rodent type cage I've never used that has lots of floor space. How ground up does the food have to be? I have roudy bush high protein breeder food in the smallest size they make, as well as seed, egg/dried bug food mixed together. I tried putting it in my food chopper, but can't get it any smaller. think a coffee grinder would work? any kind of rubber mat? I know very little about button quail chicks, I never thought they'd lay and nest on their own. Normally they lay in a corner and I throw them out. But since she went to the trouble of setting up a nest and sitting,I won't deny her.

Any suppliments I should get for them?

I have 1 dry one I'm going to put in with their boiled egg mash, and I have been putting just basic petco brand multi-vitamin in the water because she was laying so much I didn't want her to get sick before or die or something.

Is it common for the male to call more when the female is sitting, he's been doing it for 2 days none stop.

If it's 17 days and she laid the day after I left I could have hatching, if they are fertile, as early as next week. I was gone for 2 weeks after all. Should I feed the chicks anything special? how soon can they be handle/worked with? I was prepared to possible breed my cockatiels, not my buttons, must do research now.

Any and all good advice feel free to give it, I'm sure I'm going to need it.
Thanks for all your help.
