Subject: Update on our stuck chick

I'm updating everyone here on what I've posted on the other BQ board on Yahoo.

POSTED EARLY THIS MORNING:
One little guy got stuck in the egg yesterday, and I had to help him out. He had made his hole in the wrong spot and never got the hole all the way around the egg. He made a sort of slash-like gash and stayed that way for about 8 hours.

He's a mess. He's living but struggling to get on his feet. Being in the egg too long really messsed him up. His feet were curled up, so I gave him chick shoes out of medical tape last night at 1 am. This morning, at 7, I took them off and he's not any better. He simply can not get upright onto his feet, even when he had chick shoes on. He stays on his side curled in the same position he was in when he was in the shell. I help him to a spoonful of sugar water last night and just now, which he drank. He won't have anything to do with eating while I hold him and he won't eat in the brooder because he's too busy trying to right himself.

I can't stand this. Should I take him to the vet this morning and ask them to put him down so he doesn't die a long hard death?
Please help

POSTED ABOUT 2 PM SAME DAY:
Boy do I have great news! Don, I had the same idea as what you described this morning. I figured that he had to learn how to stay upright somehow, just like we are trying to train his feet to stay straight. May sound crazy- but here's what I did- AND IT WORKED!

I got a square bowl and put a piece of bread in it. It left a little "track" around the edge where the bowl was about a half an inch to an inch larger than the bread. I put the chick in the track and he moved around in the track, supported to the right and left by the sides of the bowl and the bread. This "wedge" effect has helped him learn to stay upright. For water I've been holding him and offering a spoonful of water. He stayed like this about 5 hours. About 2 hours ago I put him in with his buddies and he is doing AWESOME! He is staying upright at all times! He has been accepted, and they snuggle up in a big pile together. He's eating and drinking like all his friends. My 2 kids (11 and 9) have had a watchful eye on him all day. They named him Mr. Fuzzypants, and I'm just so glad that it looks like he's turned the corner. I'm glad I didn't put him out of his misery this morning and take him to the vet.

I'll keep everyone updated!
