Welcome to the board James!! I love it when people research and really think about it before they jump into a new animal. I am in the midst of getting a couple Tortoises and have been researching and learning about them first to make sure it is something that is right for me. Sounds like you have been doing the same about Buttons. I usually only keep two together but others do more than that. I think they do best and don't fight at all or feather pick with just two.

I have dogs and have had no problems keeping them separate. The Buttons should get used to the cats eventually but I would never leave them alone which it sounds like you won't. The screen mesh should be ok as long as it isn't too tight where they could get hurt. It should give a little. Good for you in doing your homework on them!! I think you should do just fine with some!
