Sounds like you may want a hen and cock. I don't think the trios work well. My pairs all get along great with no feather plucking or fighting when there is just two. I have had all that happen when there are more than two. The only way more work together is in an aviary setting. Some may differ with me and have trios work out but I have been hearing lately that it doesn't more and more. In the wild they only pair up so it is more natural.
