You've made a good point, Ursula. We have found the same thing to be true. Buttons who have always gotten along, suddenly turn. Nutmeg's sweet partner, Speedy, of two years, decided he would pull her feathers out. Because they were such great partners, we assumed she was sick. We left him with her to keep her warm, and they did cuddle a lot. We never once saw him peck her. However, when we removed him from the cage, to give her more intensive care, her feathers grew back. She still has some problem with the scabs on her ears and nostrils, but looks beautiful! We were so surprised at Speedy! Why did he do this? Who kows! And now Speedy is a lonely only! With another couple who had this problem, we would put the pecking male in time-out. Every time we returned him to the cage, he pecked her, no matter how long or short the time-out was. He became a permanent bachelor, too!
