Hi Visitor,

We have had a few chicks born in an incubator with straddled or splayed legs. Two we were able to correct, and the other, we couldn't. That bird, Nutmeg, scoots around on her tummy and gets along just fine. However, I don't anticipate that she will live a normal lifespan, because scooting puts more stress on her heart. Anyway, taping or tying the legs together is the only way to correct this situation. (Or taping the feet to a shortened popsicle stick) To keep the bird upright, this has been suggested, and we have done this a couple of times. Take a small, flat bowl (maybe 6 inches sqare) and fit some bread in it. You want to have a trough (or a "moat") around the outside of the bread, so the chick can move, but be held upright by the bread and the sides of the dish. Of course, you also have to put some water in the bowl and provide food. This is not the easiest thing to do, and sometimes the chick will still fall over or even get out. BUT it will work, and it does work rather quickly, if the leg is correctable.(Nutmeg's legs were tied together for quite some time. She was able to stay upright, so we didn't use the bread trick for her. When we took the thread off, her leg was straight for about a day, and then popped right back out. I think she had some other problem, other than typical splayed leg.) It is a little frustrating, but hang in there, and I think you will get good results. Let us know how it goes!

Good luck!
