Subject: Question

Nutmeg's third baby is about 15 hours younger than the other two. When it hatched, it had some dried blood on its bottom, and Thomas has noticed that on two previous hatchlings that had dried blood on their bottoms, they died. So he has been kind of worried about this one from the beginning. Up until today, it was holding its own. But I noticed earlier that it had dried poop on its bottom. I cleaned it off while ago, and about an hour later, same thing (only not as large or dry and hard). She is quite a bit smaller than the others (always was, but is very noticeably smaller now), and seems weaker. I put vitamin drops in the water and heated a gel pack wrapped in a wash cloth, and she is all cozy now. Does anyone know what is wrong with this chick, and what, if anything, can be done to help her?

On a positive note, a fourth egg hatched! I had checked the four remaining eggs in the incubator this afternoon. (Nutmeg had laid a couple more eggs after the group had been put in the incubator, so we added them late.) We went out to see if we could spot the space shuttle launching; when we came back in, I checked on the birds, and there was a little one in the incubator. What a surprise! Thomas is at a ballgame, so he will be quite pleased when he hears the news!
