Subject: Male helping incubate

Has anyone else had experiences where the male helps incubate the eggs?
I had thought that males did not help in the incubation process, but a while ago i had a female nesting, but then she died for an unknown reason, but the male continued to incubate for her (the eggs never hatched).
Just now when I was checking on my hen who is on her fifth day of incubation i discovered her and her mate both incubating a number of eggs.
Is this just something some males do, or is my male just an extra-helpful mate?
