Hi Tracy,

My guess would be that your hen is being pecked by the other bird. If it were from mating, the bald spot would be just beyond her head, on her "neck". You should separate her until her feathers grow completely back. If there is an open wound, you can put some Neosporin on it. You might want to remove the male from the cage -- put him in time out -- rather than the female. Sometimes providing a larger cage can help, having lots of hiding places can help. But sometimes a bird is just a pecker, and nothing seems to break him of his habit. We had a male who never hurt his original partner. Sometime after she died, we gave him a new mate. Eventually he started pecking her. We put him in a small box for time out and for the female to heal. This happened numerous times with different partners, until I finally decided he couldn't be with another bird ever again. Hopefully, your bird won't be as rebellious as ours!
