Hey Sinbad,

Yes, this does sound outrageous. However, our other chick died within a very short time of finding him in this condition. He was at least twice his size, and I thought he was going to explode. When Pacho seemed to become swollen, we posted on the board. It was Saturday night; no vet would have been available, and anyway, a week old chick probably would not have survived the drive. We had to do what we could, otherwise he would have died before Sunday morning. We have punctured the air pocket at least six times now; we're becoming quite the experts! The chick actually seems relieved when we do it. There is no way we could accidently hit any other body parts; it is just an air pocket under the skin, which is transparent. If the air sac can heal (and it may take up to two weeks), he has a very good chance of survival. He is our last chick, and we had to do whatever we could to save him. At this point, it appears to be working. After I punctured his "balloon" tonight, he was running around like a normal chick, eating like crazy. He is definitely a survivor! And if he does indeed survive, then we have an answer for any other chick that might develop this problem. (Hopefully it will never happen again!)
