Hi Peej,

We hatched our first batch in an incubator. Just 12 days ago, our hen hatched four little chicks. She was sitting on at least a dozen eggs, but lost interest in sitting once some were hatched. We did have fully formed birds in those eggs, and if we had removed the chicks, she may have continued to sit on the eggs. Or if we had moved the eggs to an incubator, they may have hatched.

One chick was born at our bedtime, and I trusted the hen to take care of it in the night. It was very weak the next morning and died later that evening, we presume from being chilled. If I had put the chicks in the brooder, it may have lived.

Another chick died, perhaps from being trampled on by the hen. We're just not sure. Again, it may have lived if it had been in a brooder.

The hen was a great mother and she was lots of fun to watch with her chicks. We did separate them and put the two remaining chicks in the brooder at day 5 or 6. She called constantly for them about 2 hours, and they peeped for her at least 3 or 4 hours before settling down.

Out of the two remaining chicks, one died, and we're still fighting for the other one. But he still looks great as of now. Many posts below about him.

So you have some issues to consider as to how you will handle your chicks. I know that there are several here who have hatched repeatedly. Maybe they can give us some advice that has come from their experience.
