The birds are in a large cage (which is in my classroom) and it is about 5 ft or more long and 2.5 feet wide. The hens sitting are in the front corner next to the food and water dish. There are several other females and males with them. Everyone else seems to just let them sit around- occassionally another female will have a seat too, but not as long. I just wondered how the little ones will do on the adult bedding (carefresh). Also since there are multiple birds- there are other females and several males. Removing the males would be as much work as moving the hens and babies. I can certainly use a heat lamp when they hatch. I guess I should just keep an eye on them and see how they do? If I notice any problems from the males or other females I will separate mom and chicks into their own cage with a heat lamp. The water dish is set up so they don't get bedding in it, so I will make sure they have a lower dish with marbles. The food dish is low and they shouldn't have any problems accessing it. They would have trouble avoiding all the food available to them at bedding level! Thanks for the advice. I will let you know what happens!
