I don't know that you need an expensive webcam. It's just that the mac tends to make things easier. I repair and do data salvage on macs, among other things, so I usually have a few sitting around I'm not using at the moment.

I hear you about the router lockups. We had to get a new router because ours was always doing this. It also happens a lot more if you are sharing a connection so more than one machine is using the router. If that's the case, one way to lessen how often it happens is to manually set the IP address for each machine, so you don't have two with the same ID. If you're not familiar with how to do this, I can probably walk you through it if you want to try it.
